Historic One-Room Green District Schoolhouse Open to Visitors

07/10/2016 - 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Green District School
South Canterbury Road (RT 169) at Library Road - Canterbury, CT 06331

Admission and parking for the Green schoolhouse are always free.

Drop by this summer for a visit at the historic 19th century one-room Green district schoolhouse, now fully restored by Canterbury Historical Society volunteers. It’s the only one of Canterbury’s old district schoolhouses that’s open to the public. Bring the kids or grandkids for a glimpse of school life on a more intimate scale than nowadays, and without the technology that seems to permeate every aspect of modern life.

Because this charming little schoolhouse was in service well into the 1950s, chances are that during your visit one or more of the friendly Canterbury Historical Society volunteers who greet you may have attended this very school. Who better to show you around and answer your questions?

Regular open hours this season are the second and fourth Sundays in July, August, and September from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.

  • Sunday June 26
  • Sundays July 10 & 24
  • Sundays August 14 & 28
  • Sundays September 11 & 25
  • plus Saturday, September 17 in conjunction with annual Old Home Day

You can also call 860-546-9062 to request an appointment for a different date and time.

You’re Invited
We invite you to become a Canterbury Historical Society member. You’ll find a membership form on the About Us page of this website.

But even if you aren’t a member, our monthly history-themed programs are free and the public is warmly invited.  The business session starts at 7:00 pm. If you want to skip it and come just for the program, arrive about 7:30.

The Canterbury Historical Society’s regular monthly meetings are normally on the second Friday evening of the month unless otherwise noted. We do not meet in July and August, when we take a summer break. But we often hold special events over the summer months.

We’re happy to send email announcements of programs and events to nonmembers. If you’d like to be added to our list, send a note, including your full name and the email address where you want to receive notices, using the email form on the Contact page of this website. We never share your contact information, and you can opt out at any time.
