There will be a brief business session at 7:00 pm, followed by the program & refreshments. Free and open to the public. Bring a friend. Sorry about the late notice, but our speaker is under the weather and had to cancel. We will still hold a brief business meeting, but there won’t be a program this evening. We will reschedule with Bruce Clouette as soon as possible. Learn more about the story of the French expeditionary force that assisted the American army in the Revolution, culminating in the defeat of the British at Yorktown. The French army landed in Newport, R.I. and then marched overland through Connecticut to meet up with George Washington’s army encamped on the Hudson River in New York. The French troops made camp about every 15 miles, including one in Canterbury on the return march. This presentation explores the vestiges of the old roads the French army marched over, the taverns, and other historic buildings that still remain along the route, along with the archaeology of some of the French camp sites. Bruce Clouette has been active in the fields of Connecticut history and historic preservation since 1975. He earned a Ph.D. in History from UConn. You’re Invited But even if you aren’t a member, our monthly history-themed programs are free and the public is warmly invited. The business session starts at 7:00. If you want to skip it and come just for the program, arrive about 7:30. The Canterbury Historical Society’s regular monthly meetings are on the second Friday evening of the month unless otherwise noted. We don’t meet in July and August, when we take a summer break, although we often hold special events over the summer. Not on our mailing list? And don’t miss us on Facebook and Twitter. |
