The Connecticut Office of Tourism is sponsoring the 13th annual Connecticut Open House Day on Saturday, June 10th. Plan on stopping in at the historic 19th century one-room Green (Centre) district schoolhouse on Canterbury Green. This charming little schoolhouse, now fully restored by Canterbury Historical Society volunteers, was in service into the 1950s, and you might meet one or more of its friendly former students on Open House Day. Bring the kids for window into what education was like on a smaller and more human scale, and without the technology that’s so universal in our time.
Open House Day is a one-day statewide event designed to showcase Connecticut’s diverse world of history, art, and tourism—a great way for residents to discover or rediscover all that is happening in our state. The hope is that once Connecticut residents learn more about the treasures in our own backyard, they will share their newly gained appreciation and enthusiasm with family and friends and become Connecticut ambassadors.
For more information about Open House Day, see http://www.cultureandtourism.org/cct/cwp/view.asp?a=2128&Q=500314&.
But even if you aren’t a member, our monthly history-themed programs are free and the public is warmly invited. The business session starts at 7:00. If you want to skip it and come just for the program, arrive about 7:30.
The Canterbury Historical Society’s regular monthly meetings and programs are normally on the second Friday evening of the month unless otherwise noted. We do not have monthly meetings in July and August, but do often have special events over the summer.
