Can You Provide a Reseacher with Information on Butts Bridge?
  July 26th, 2008

The Canterbury Historical Society has received the following request. If you have information that could be of help to Mr. Raber, please contact him directly.

Dear Canterbury Historical Society -

During constructionAs part of the upcoming rehabilitation of Butts Bridge, I am preparing a National Register nomination for the existing structure, completed c1937. I have a full set of original drawings, and completed extensive field photography some time ago including views from the Quinebaug River, and views of the surviving abutments from the earlier crossing upstream.

I understand the last version of the earlier crossing was built in 1886. As part of the context of this crossing, I am looking for more information on the history of the earlier crossing, and what happened to it in the 1936 flood leading to the present structure. If the Society or any of its members has information, including personal historical knowledge or unpublished images, I would appreciate learning about it and will be glad to come back to Canterbury as needed. You may contact me by e-mail or phone. Thanks for any help.
