Partnering with Fund2Orgs of Orlando, Florida, the Canterbury Historical Society recently kicked off a shoe drive fundraiser to raise funds for our on-going projects and programs. Running through June 2nd, CHS will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes collected, as Funds2Orgs will issue a check for the collected shoes at the end of the shoe drive.
Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used and new shoes at one of the collection boxes we have around town including the Canterbury IGA (4 North Canterbury Road), the Canterbury Town Hall (1 Municipal Drive) or the Canterbury Transfer Station on Kinne Road. Boxes will also be placed at both of the town schools and additionally, CHS is planning a drive-thru shoe drop off event on Saturday, May 10th at the historic Green (Centre District) Schoolhouse located on Library Road. Historical Society members will be there from 10 am to noon to accept your shoe donations – just drive up and drop them off!
All donated shoes will be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise (small business) partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send her son to law school!
We are excited about our shoe drive as we know that most people have extra shoes in their closets that we’re hoping they would like to donate to us. By doing so, we raise money for the continuing restoration of the Historic Cleaveland Cemetery and Green Schoolhouse, as well as our monthly programs that are free and open to the public, while also having the chance to help families in developing nations who need economic opportunities. It’s a win-win for everyone!
By donating gently worn, used and new shoes to the Canterbury Historical Society, the shoes
will be given a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives around the world.
