SUMMARY:Paul Revere's Ride: The Truth Behind the Tavern-Keeper's Tales
DESCRIPTION:Featuring a dramatic recitation of the Longfellow poem “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere”\, this timely America 250 program will also discuss the historical background on the Lexington Alarm & the riders who carried it\, and a review of the Romance that the Revolution inspired as it neared its 19th century Centennial – some of which colours our own perception to this day. Presented in period attire appropriate to the publication date of the poem (1863)\, it also involves a PowerPoint to illustrate the historical context. \nAbout the presenter:\nA member of the Dirty Blue Shirts\, an experiential history collective of living historians\, scholars\, and artists based from Eastern Connecticut\, Nathan Rumney is an actor\, director\, playwright\, and producer with over seventy theatrical productions under his belt over the course of his nearly two decades in the field. His inherent penchant for the natural sciences\, love of mythology\, and plunges into philosophy have greatly influenced his previous and current roles in portraying living history. He derives his greatest joy from bringing education and entertainment together for the enjoyment and benefit of audiences of all ages!

DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States\, we invite you to meet six Revolutionary War heroines including a soldier\, a spy\, and a seamstress. \nTo get a real sense of women’s lives and their war efforts\, Bev York\, Director of Programming for The America Museum\, will walk the audience through the empowering evolution of women during the Revolution by wearing different hats\, accessories\, and various vintage props to bring these ladies to life. \nThough women’s stories and their documented contributions to the war for independence are few\, they represent what thousands of women probably did do. Women ran the family farms and businesses while men were away. But\, they also were camp cooks\, laundresses and nurses\, participating in resistance efforts and\, surprisingly\, they were also spies and soldiers. \nThis free historical program is open to the public and will begin at 7:30 PM following our monthly business meeting which begins at 7:00 PM in the Town Hall Community Room. DESCRIPTION:The Canterbury Historical Society is back in action with monthly meetings and programs for 2026\, and we’re starting the year by welcoming the return of some fine friends: Rick Spencer & Dawn Indermuehle with what promises to be an interesting AND entertaining program! \nIn 1824\, the Marquis de Lafayette returned to America to visit the nation he had fought years earlier to establish. He received a celebrity’s welcome\, visited all 24 states and was honored as a surviving hero of the Revolutionary War. This presentation includes six songs that were popular during Lafayette’s time in America during the Revolution\, and six that were composed to commemorate his return in 1824. The songs are arranged for two-part a capella vocals or are accompanied on guitar or banjo. The program also includes information about Lafayette’s fascinating life. \nRick Spencer and Dawn Indermuehle develop and present theme-based music and history programs\, performing songs that give cultural insight into interesting times\, places and events in American history. Rick and Dawn carefully craft their vocals and accompaniment to sound as true to a song’s era or style as possible. Their vast repertoire includes music from the Colonial era to the present day.  Rick and Dawn use these songs to illustrate the evolution of our nation’s culture and history in an informative and entertaining way. \nThe Canterbury Historical Society meets at the Canterbury Town Hall Community Room\, One Municipal Drive\, Canterbury. SUMMARY:Outhouses and Their Role in the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we welcome historian and educator Bev York back to Canterbury and discover the fascinating history about how the Colonial outhouse – aka the necessary privy – played a major part in the American Revolution. In the olden days\, saltpeter – a major component in gunpowder – was primarily produced by collecting nitrate-rich soil particularly from manure heaps\, stables and … outhouses! Throughout the Revolutionary War\, General George Washington and the Continental Congress struggled to secure enough gunpowder. About 90% of the powder used by the Continental Army was imported\, with the remaining 10% produced domestically. This made powder mills like the one in Windham operated by Jedidiah Elderkin and Nathaniel Wales\, Jr. vital for boosting America’s domestic supply. \nA popular speaker at many venues\, Bev York received a BS in Art Education from Central Connecticut State University and an MS in History Education from Eastern Connecticut State University. Currently the Education Director at the America Museum\, in past years\, she served as the director of the Windham Textile & History Museum and as the site administrator at the Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry. \nFree and open to the public\, the program will begin following a short business meeting at 7:00 PM.

DESCRIPTION:Take a fascinating storytelling trip around the globe for a sampling of beautiful and historic lighthouses with author and Canterbury resident\, Elinor DeWire. Elinor has traveled widely and written extensively about these iconic\, humanitarian structures. Her work on this topic has been honored with the Ben Franklin Book Award\, the National League of American Pen Women Award\, and the Coast Guard Book Award as well as the Coast Guard’s Meritorious Public Service Medal. Elinor serves as the Education Chair for the U.S. Lighthouse Society and is the sponsor of the high endurance Coast Guard Cutter FREDERICK HATCH which is based in Guam. \nFree and open to the public\, there will be door prizes as well as autographed books available.

There is a small incline into the cemetery. Limited parking is available at the old Canterbury Cones parking area\, 57 North Canterbury Road across from The Pillars. \nJoin Colonial gravestone expert\, David Malloy\, for a walk through the Colonial gravestones of the historic Cleaveland Cemetery\, Canterbury’s first public burying grounds. Highlights of the walk will include stones carved by some of the area’s most prominent early gravestone carvers such as the Mannings\, Obadiah Wheeler\, John Hartshorne\, Richard Kimball and more. This walk was so popular last year\, we decided to do it again this year! No registration required. \nColonial Gravestones of Carey Cemetery\nSaturday\, October 19th at 2:00 PM (Rain date\, Sunday\, October 20th)\nLocation: 208 South Canterbury Road\, Canterbury\nAdditional Info: Pets are NOT welcome. Parking is available in the cemetery or near the stone walls on the outside. DESCRIPTION:Canterbury’s favorite way to welcome the return of the fall will be taking place on the Town Green – aka the lawn of the First Congregational Church – on the last Saturday in September. This popular hometown event will feature demonstrations of traditional crafts & trades\, historical reenactors\, delicious food\, vendors of all varieties\, children’s activities and more! Admission and parking are always FREE and the event goes on rain or shine though we’re really hoping for shine this year after a couple of soggy years! \nParking for Old Home Day will be at the Dr. Helen Baldwin School at 45 Westminster Road and a shuttle bus will be running regularly to transport attendees between the school and the Green. There will be a limited amount of handicapped parking on the Green but all others are encouraged to ride the shuttle bus. \nIn addition to all of the other activities\, we’ll be holding our Second Annual Scarecrow Contest! Last year’s contest was a big hit so we’re hoping for more great entries this year! Registration is required by Sept. 15th to secure a plot for your scarecrow. The lecture will include a demonstration along with a question and answer period. Attendees will be invited to enjoy delicious samples of chocolate and hot cocoa and if you like what you taste\, you can buy some to take home with you! SUMMARY:The 1944 Hartford Circus Fire
DESCRIPTION:The worst disaster in Connecticut’s modern history\, as well as one of the worst fire disasters in United States history\, occurred 80 years ago on July 6th\, 1944. The tragic fire occurred during a matinee performance of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in Hartford’s north end which was attended by upwards of 6\,000 people. The panic which ensued as people attempted to flee the Big Top\, proved as deadly as the flames around them and by the time the disaster was over\, 167 people had perished including many under the age of 15. \nPlease join us as we welcome Natalie Belanger of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History back to Canterbury for a brand-new presentation on this horrific event which changed the lives of so many people while also inspiring the State of Connecticut to enact new\, strict fire safety regulations for future public performances. Free and open to the public\, the program will be held at the Canterbury Town Hall Community Room (1 Municipal Drive) following a short business meeting at 7 PM.

SUMMARY:Jordan Freeman: The Fight to Set a People Free
DESCRIPTION:The Canterbury Historical Society will present Kevin Johnson as Jordan Freeman\, an African-American servant of John Ledyard and the body servant of Colonel William Ledyard in the Revolutionary War. An actual person and native of Old Lyme\, although Jordan Freeman did not enlist himself\, he witnessed key events of the War for Independence while with Colonel Ledyard. \nHistorians estimate the number of black soldiers in the Revolutionary War to have been about 5\,000 men – including nearly 500 from Connecticut – who served in militias\, seagoing services\, and support activities. Some enlisted because they felt it was their duty; others because they were offered their freedom in return for satisfactory completion of a set period of service. This presentation is based on extensive research in the collections of the Connecticut State Library and the Museum of Connecticut History in Hartford. \nPlease join us as we welcome Kevin Johnson\, an employee of the State Library’s History and Genealogy Unit\, back to Canterbury for what will definitely be a great program. Kevin has been portraying Jordan Freeman for about 13 years and if this program is anything like last June’s presentation of Private William Webb\, you won’t want to miss it! SUMMARY:A Musical History of the Ovation Guitar
DESCRIPTION:It is more than fair to say that the Ovation guitar\, built in both Moosup and New Hartford Connecticut\, played a significant role in the singer/songwriter explosion of the late 60’s and early 70’s music scene. Advancements in live-sound systems at that time required an instrument that was yet to be produced but when the Ovation Guitar Company stepped up to fill that void\, the new Connecticut-made guitar propelled the singer/songwriter to the forefront of the music scene. \nDuring this presentation\, musician Jim Lenn will explore not only the history of the guitar\, but the role the Ovation guitar played during this period. Jim will also present some of the music that was performed during the late 60s and early 70s on his own Ovation Guitar. \nJoin us in the Canterbury Town Hall Community Room\, 1 Municipal Drive\, for this historical musical program following a short monthly business meeting at 7 PM. SUMMARY:"Cantica Nativitatis” - Nine Centuries of Christmas Music
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Richard Franklin Donohue \nThe Canterbury Historical Society is pleased to host historian and musician Richard Franklin Donohue who will explore an extraordinary repertoire of Christmas music from the 10th through 19th centuries. The music of “Cantica Nativitatis\,” translated literally from Latin as “songs of Christmas\,” spans the history of Christmas-themed compositions across the second millennium. \nNo tradition has yielded a greater collection of music other than that of Christmas and at this wonderful program that will help launch the holiday season\, you’ll hear carols presented in their original languages of German\, Latin\, Middle English\, French\, and Modern English sung both a cappella and with harpsichord accompaniment. The first piece Donohue will perform at the event is a Gregorian chant written in 990 with the last\, and newest song\, added to the setlist coming from the middle of the 19th century.

DESCRIPTION:The Canterbury Historical Society will be hosting a talk and tour of the historic Cleaveland Cemetery on Friday\, October 13th at 11:00 am as part of The Last Green Valley annual Walktober event. \nLed by David Malloy\, moderator of the very popular Facebook Group – Early New England Gravestones and the Men Who Made Them – we’ll explore the formerly named Old Canterbury Burying Ground which was established circa 1720 as the first public cemetery in Canterbury. In addition to several notable burials\, the cemetery is home to gravestones that were carved by at least 14 of the more well-known Colonial gravestone carvers in the area including John Hartshorne\, Obadiah Wheeler\, Josiah and Rockwell Manning\, Richard Kimball\, Gershom Bartlett and more. \nWhile viewing the beautiful gravestones\, you’ll see the burial sites of the founder of Canterbury\, Major James Fitch and his wife\, a Mayflower descendant\, Alice “Abee” Bradford Fitch; the first pastor called to Canterbury\, Reverend Samuel Estabrook and his wife Rebecca; a leader of the Separatist movement in the colony of Connecticut\, Reverend Solomon Paine; and the founder of the city of Cleveland\, Ohio\, General Moses Cleaveland and his wife Esther Champion Cleaveland. \nLocated at 52 North Canterbury Road\, parking for the event will be available across the street at the former Canterbury Cones parking lot thanks to the generous permission of the lot’s new owner\, Trent Pappas\, Jr. Please note that parking will be at your own risk and the owner is not responsible for any damages or injuries while using the lot. SUMMARY:Moses Cleaveland and the Western Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Known as the Western Reserve\, once upon a time a substantial portion of Ohio belonged to Connecticut. The acreage was part of the original land grant given to Connecticut by the British monarchy dating back to the 1600s. When Connecticut gave up its claim to most of the land stretching westward to the Pacific Ocean\, it still kept the property in Ohio. \nCanterbury native Moses Cleaveland played a huge role in settling the land. He was hired as the lead surveyor and led the first formal expedition to start the process of creating new settlement opportunities for his fellow Connecticut residents. During that adventurous trip\, he founded the area that became the city of Cleveland. \nDuring our September program\, you can hear this story from Mike Allen\, the producer and host of the podcast Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut’s Beaten Path (https://www.amazingtalesct.com). Mike specializes in bringing local history to life through his background in journalism\, radio broadcasting\, podcasting and public speaking. \nFor 10 years\, Mike was News Director at western Connecticut radio station i-95 FM (WRKI-FM) before becoming Press Secretary to the Mayor of Danbury. During a subsequent 25-year corporate career\, he worked\, lived\, and traveled internationally\, specializing in public speaking\, communications and marketing. A Connecticut resident for more than 50 years\, Mike currently makes his home in Danbury.

SUMMARY:The Life and Times of William Webb: An African American Civil War Soldier from Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us for an unforgettable evening with Kevin Johnson\, a living history performer\, as he vividly brings to life the struggles of an African American soldier who served during the Civil War. Private William Riley Webb\, a native of Hartford\, was an actual soldier who was recruited in 1863 and served in the 29th Connecticut Colored Infantry Regiment. In addition to fighting in several battles in Virginia\, the 29th is credited as being the first infantry regiment to enter Richmond when the city surrendered in the Siege of Petersburg. \nTold from an emotional and exciting first-person perspective which vividly illustrates the struggles of African-Americans in the Colored Infantry during the Civil War\, Private Webb is portrayed by Mr. Kevin Johnson of the Connecticut State Library. Based on extensive research in the collections of the Connecticut State Library and the Museum of Connecticut History\, Kevin has been bringing Private Webb to life for over 20 years at more than 600 presentations in schools\, libraries\, historical societies and other venues around the state. \nFree and open to the public\, we hope you’ll make plans to attend and bring a friend!

SUMMARY:What Makes Connecticut "Connecticut"?
DESCRIPTION:Between 2012 and 2015\, the Library of Congress commissioned acclaimed documentary photographer Carol M. Highsmith to travel Connecticut in order to permanently capture images of the state’s iconic places and cultural treasures as they appeared at the beginning of the 21st century. Highsmith asked state historian emeritus Walter W. Woodward to help her identify Connecticut’s must-see sites and to collaborate with her on a book produced as part of the project. \nIn “What Makes Connecticut\, Connecticut\,” Woodward uses some of those exquisite Highsmith images along with a powerful story that is coupled with moving and evocative songs from the past and present to describe the look\, feel\, and unique character of one of America’s first – and most original – states. \nAccompanying Woodward for this presentation is the acoustic “Band of Steady Habits” who came together in 2014 to share their love of music and use their talents to help create a new kind of public history presentation. Rachel Smith\, Teagan Smith\, Jeremy Teitelbaum and Duke York\, along with Walt Woodward\, use banjo\, guitars\, violin\, recorders\, bass\, percussion\, and beautiful harmonies to perform songs – some old\, some original\, and some contemporary – to accompany visually rich and evocative historical stories. \nFree and open to the public\, we hope that you’ll join us for this very special presentation which is sure to both educate and entertain!

DESCRIPTION:Presented by Ranger Bill Reid of the Last Green Valley. \nJoin us as we welcome Ranger Bill Reid of the Last Green Valley back to Canterbury to share with us an update on the status of the bald eagles that live in our town and surrounding area. With abundant rivers\, lakes and ponds The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor has the perfect habitat for bald eagles — our national symbol. Over the past decade eagles have been returning to the region and nesting along our rivers and lakes including nests along the Quinebaug River in Canterbury. \nThis program tells the history of bald eagles in the country and describes the unique characteristics of these amazing birds. Information will be provided on TLGV’s role assisting the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to monitor bald eagle nests and statewide midwinter eagle survey.

The mission was routine: Sail from Electric Boat\, rendezvous with a submarine\, conduct tests\, return home but she never made it to her destination and never returned to port. Learn about the R/V Sea Surveyor\, her mission\, and the incredible experience twelve crewmen had after her sinking in a presentation by Walter Banzhaf\, one of the twelve survivors of the Sea Surveyor.
